Creativity Blog Post 4

This week, I did a creative exercise found in the book:

"CAFFEINE FOR THE CREATIVE MIND" by Stefan Mumaw and Wendy Lee Oldfield.

The exercise can be found on page 80.

Instructions: "Hold On, I'm Folding My Quarter"

"Money is so 20th century. Credit and debit cards are used for almost everything these days.

It seems that traditional bills and coins are on the way out as we move closer to a cashless society.

It's your task to save the helpless bartering system through the power of design!

It's your task to redesign money. But don't just redesign what the bills and coins look like. Consider how they are used and what alternatives might be available.

Are they bills and coins at all?

Do bills need another shape?

What materials are they made from?

Consider all aspects of the concept of barter, both in the practicality of the objects and the value of the individual items."

My idea is to eliminate cash (Bills and Coins) completely, with the goal of reducing counterfeiting, improving security, and embracing a new era of barter and currency exchange, with the:

Biometric Payment Card (BPC)

Concept: A multi-value digital card that stores and transacts values from $.01 to $100,000

  • Material: Flexible carbon-fiber composite, waterproof polymer, crease-resistant with embedded OLED display and fingerprint scanner
  • Design: One card, one person, secured by fingerprint
  • Use: Replaces high-denomination bills; confirms user identity at point-of-sale, tap to pay via vending machines, or person-to-person with a scan app
  • Anti-counterfeit Features: No magnetic strip; dynamic visual code regenerates every use
  • Bonus: Shows current balance and recent transaction history on the card face, can be tracked and locked via mobile app if lost or stolen
