This week, I did a creative exercise found in the book:

"CAFFEINE FOR THE CREATIVE MIND" by Stefan Mumaw and Wendy Lee Oldfield.

The exercise can be found on page 106.

Instructions: Nice Hood Ornament!

There are throngs of people out there whose only job is to improve our cars. From GPS satellite navigation systems to windshield wipers that sense rain. Automobile improvements are coming faster and stronger than ever before.

Today, you join these honorable pioneers.

Your task is to create 3 improvements to the modern car. They can be mechanical, cosmetic, futuristic, sensible, small, large, whatever.

They don't even have to be obtainable or even possible, their only restriction is that they have to make the modern car better in some way.

  1. Self-Healing Exterior Paint: A special resin paint that can "heal" itself from minor scratches and dings.
  2. Smart Windshield Display: A windshield that overlays real-time information, such as navigation directions, speed, and traffic warnings, eliminating the need to look down at the dashboard or your phone.
  3. 360° Solar Skin Panels: A heating and cooling system that runs entirely on solar power, allowing the car's interior to stay comfortable even when the engine is off.

This exercise is designed to use your imagination of something familiar, the modern car, and brainstorm ideas of how it could be improved.

I learned that even though #1 and #3 are not currently obtainable or possible, new ideas are valuable because there was once a time when a "horseless carriage" and “travel by airplanes” were once deemed impossible.

This week, I did a creative exercise found in the book:

"CAFFEINE FOR THE CREATIVE MIND" by Stefan Mumaw and Wendy Lee Oldfield.

The exercise can be found on page 103.

Instructions: Replace the Receptionist

Excuse me, your 3:00 is here.

47 floors of office workers, hundreds and hundreds of people. You enter the building and you're immediately greeted by the liaison between you down here and them up there... The receptionist.

The receptionist's job is to communicate to someone up there that you down here require their attention. The usual choice of communication is the telephone or intercom.

Today, you're in charge of coming up with a better system to let them up there know you're down here.

Either by writing out the idea or sketching it on paper, develop a better solution to alert someone within the company that they have a visitor or that that there is some attention needed at the front desk.

My idea is to design a self-service kiosk to be placed in the front of an office building. The kiosk includes a touchscreen where visitors can enter three pieces of information:

  • Company
  • Floor #
  • Name

Once the information is input, the recipient receives a notification on the intercom and can choose to allow the visitor to proceed or not by sending a notification to security, posted just beyond the kiosk.

This problem-solving exercise is designed to get you the brainstorm ideas that work as well or better than a receptionist in a professional environment.

Receptionists manage flow, answer questions, and provide direction, but a kiosk can handle many of those functions if designed correctly.

This kiosk, or multiple kiosks at the ground floor lobby could reduce the need for receptionists on every floor.

I learned that it is not always about inventing something brand new, sometimes creativity means thinking about what already exists and repurposing it to increase efficiency.

Portfolio - Project 4

Instructions:

1 - Based upon the jobs you looked at and the requested skills of each, identify a piece you have previously created that you could improve to show you possess the skills being requested, or create a new project to show that you have the skills the employer is looking for.

2 - Create a blog post about this project: who is the audience, what is the message, and what are you hoping to accomplish with the piece, what design decisions did you make, and why did you make each one?

Each of the jobs I researched required experience with Adobe Creative Cloud and Photoshop.

I wanted to create a new project to show that I have the skills employers are looking for.

I decided to do Adobe Photoshop Classroom in a book Lesson 14 -- Visit Paris Travel Poster.

Visit Paris Travel Poster

The intended audience is travelers.

The goal and the message is to have travelers take action and Visit Paris.

The lesson files began with images that needed color correction through clipping masks, levels and curves.

The lesson also explained RGB, grayscale, and CMYK color spaces.

After all color corrections were made, I exported the poster for the web, for printers as a CMYK image, and as a pdf.

I will use this knowledge in future Photoshop projects.

We have done a couple of posters as assignments in the past.

I wanted to create a new project to show that I have the skills employers are looking for.

I looked through Adobe Photoshop Classroom in a book and decided to do Lesson 9 - Advanced Compositing.

The lesson files began with an image of a man and components of a Frankenstein monster, that you had to apply smart filters, liquify filter, color effects to create the monster.

"The curse of Frank & Stein" movie poster

In this lesson, I learned how to do the following:

Apply and edit smart filters.

Use the liquify filter to creatively distort an image.

Apply color effects to selected areas of an image.

Apply filters to create various effects.

Use the history panel to return to a previous state.

Upscale a low-resolution image while maintaining quality.

Once you had created the monster you have to blend it into a background image. You then apply and blend in a tombstone and an image of two people screaming.

The intended audience is fans of horror movies, and the message is to go see this movie.

The goal is to increase awareness of this new horror movie by creating this movie poster, which is a twist on the original Frankenstein movie (Frank & Stein).

This lesson taught me how to apply and edit smart filters, use the liquify filter to distort in image, apply color effects to selected areas of an image, upscale a low resolution image, and merge all of the images to blend in for the movie poster.

I will use this knowledge in future Photoshop projects.

3 Portfolio Platforms

3 Portfolio Platforms

3 Portfolio Platforms

Instructions: Compare the Pros and Cons of 3 different platforms for your online portfolio. Which one best suits your needs and why?

1. Adobe Portfolio

Pros:

  • Free with Adobe Creative Cloud -- No extra cost if you already pay for Adobe apps like Photoshop or Illustrator.
  • Clean Templates -- Portfolio-focused, with responsive designs that look professional on all devices.
  • Easy Setup -- Minimal learning curve, you can publish quickly.

Cons:

  • Limited Customization -- Templates are somewhat rigid compared to platforms like WordPress or Webflow.
  • No Built-In Blogging -- Not ideal if you want to share case studies, design process posts, or thought leadership.
  • Dependent on Adobe Subscription -- You lose access if you stop paying for Creative Cloud.

2. Behance

Pros:

  • Large Creative Community -- Designers, agencies, and recruiters actively browse Behance, giving you exposure.
  • Networking & Job Opportunities -- Built-in social features (likes, follows, comments) help you grow visibility.
  • Easy to Use -- Uploading projects is straightforward; no coding or web design knowledge needed.
  • Free -- No cost to set up a portfolio.

Cons:

  • Less Control Over Branding -- Limited ability to customize beyond Behance's layout and structure.
  • Crowded Platform -- Standing out can be difficult since there are millions of portfolios.
  • Not a Personal Website -- Recruiters may see your work but not in the context of your own branded domain.

3. Blogger.com

Pros:

  • Community and Networking: A blog-based portfolio allows you to invite discussions and highlight collaborations, helping you connect with other designers, clients, and enthusiasts in the field.
  • Showcasing Your Process: Unlike a traditional portfolio that focuses on final, polished pieces, a blog allows you to show your unpolished, authentic self and your learning journey.
  • Content and SEO: Blogs are content-driven and can help you establish yourself as an authority in your field, which can attract more traffic to your website and enhance your online presence.

Cons:

  • Time and Consistency: Maintaining a blog requires consistent effort and time. An outdated blog can reflect poorly on your professionalism.
  • Less Professional Image: A blog may not convey a professional image because it often includes personal content and opinions.
  • Limited Customization: While it is possible to use custom themes, the level of design control and customization is often not as high as with a platform specifically built for portfolios or a self-hosted solution like WordPress.

I explored Adobe Portfolio and Behance and they are both excellent portfolio sites.

I am going to start with Adobe Portfolio after seeing Litcy's portfolio, I really like the way she set it up

As a backup platform, Blogger.com suits my needs because I am familiar and comfortable with the platform and I can include links back to the original post that has a full description of what I present in my portfolio.

My Blogger.com site also has the chronological posts of my Graphic Design journey on the right hand side of the screen.

This week, I did a creative exercise found in the book:

"CAFFEINE FOR THE CREATIVE MIND" by Stefan Mumaw and Wendy Lee Oldfield.

The exercise can be found on page 101.

Instructions: Magic 8-Ball

In 1946, a man in Cincinnati, Ohio, invented a timeless piece of Americana, the Magic 8-Ball. The fortune telling phenomenon has withstood the test of time and even still today, fortunes are won and lost on the serendipitous outcome of the answers that appear from the mysterious blue water. The answers are meant to be responses to various "yes" or "no" questions. Your task today is to customize the responses to fit various creative questions you might have throughout your day. They can be client responses, boss responses, or even design choices made easy. Come up with eight new answers to your creative questions!

Research:The original Magic 8-Ball can display 20 possible answers. These answers are printed on a 20-sided die (an icosahedron) that floats inside the ball. The responses are categorized into three types:

  • 10 Positive (Affirmative) Answers:
    • It is certain.
    • It is decidedly so.
    • Without a doubt.
    • Yes definitely.
    • You may rely on it.
    • As I see it, yes.
    • Most likely.
    • Outlook good.
    • Yes.
    • Signs point to yes.
  • 5 Negative (Negative) Answers:
    • Don't count on it.
    • My reply is no.
    • My sources say no.
    • Outlook not so good.
    • Very doubtful.
  • 5 Ambiguous (Non-committal) Answers:
    • Reply hazy, try again.
    • Ask again later.
    • Better not tell you now.
    • Cannot predict now.
    • Concentrate and ask again.

I decided to come up with 8 answers for: Graphic Design Client Responses, with the same percentages: 50% Positive, 25% Negative, and 25% Ambiguous.

4 Positive (Affirmative) Answers:

  • Looks great, let's proceed.
  • That works perfectly.
  • Absolutely, start the project.
  • Approved as is.

2 Negative Answers:

  • No, rework the design.
  • The client is dissatisfied.

2 Ambiguous (Non-committal) Answers:

  • Client said maybe.
  • Ask again tomorrow.

I remember the Magic 8-Ball, I know I had one in the past. Out of curiosity, I looked up all of the original answers. I had forgotten some of the responses and had no idea of the percentages of the positive, negative and ambiguous answers.

This exercise required me to choose one of the three categories the instructions suggested and then decide on answers for each type of response category.

I enjoy doing research and applying an old, established set of ideas to a new project will help me in the future.

This week, I did a creative exercise found in the book:

"CAFFEINE FOR THE CREATIVE MIND" by Stefan Mumaw and Wendy Lee Oldfield.

The exercise can be found on page 100.

Instructions:

Laws are here for our protection. They bring order in an otherwise chaotic environment. Most laws are based on written, definable foundations, but some are what sports folks refer to as "unwritten" laws. "Unwritten" laws aren't true laws, but you still should obey them. For instance, in baseball, if you're winning by 15 runs in the top of the ninth inning, you should not steal a base. It's not against the rules, but it's showing up the other team, and thus qualifies as something you probably shouldn't do. In our creative lives, we rarely run across any formal laws, written or unwritten, but what if we had to create a set of "unwritten" laws for our work environment? That's your task today. Create 5 unwritten rules for graphic design.

1. White Space Is Not Wasted Space

Negative space is not "empty", it gives designs room to breathe.

2. If Everything Stands Out, Nothing Stands Out

Hierarchy is essential.

3. Typography Can Speak More Than the Words Do

Fonts carry personality and meaning.

4. Trends Fade, Clarity Lasts

Designs built on clarity, balance, and purpose will remain effective long after the fad passes.

5. Your First Idea Is Rarely the Best One

Iteration leads to better solutions.

This exercise was meant to make you think beyond the technical side of design and into the "unwritten rules" that creative professionals follow.

Although some of these items may actually appear in graphic design books, these are the first five things that came to mind that Mr. Williams has repeated more than once. (Along with C.R.A.P.)

I will use these items in designing future projects along with numerous other good habits I have learned in this course.

Instructions:

1 - Based upon the jobs you looked at and the requested skills of each, identify a piece you have previously created that you could improve to show you possess the skills being requested, or create a new project to show that you have the skills the employer is looking for.

2 - Create a blog post about this project: who is the audience, what is the message, and what are you hoping to accomplish with the piece, what design decisions did you make, and why you made each one?

For Graphic Design Portfolio course Project 2, I decided to create a new project to show that I have the skills the Department of Veterans Affairs is looking for in a graphic designer.

Department of Veterans Affairs

The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) is a cabinet-level executive branch department of the U.S. government. It provides a wide range of benefits and services to Veterans, their families, and survivors. The VA operates the largest integrated healthcare system in the United States, offering medical care through its Veterans Health Administration (VHA). In addition to healthcare, the VA provides non-healthcare benefits such as disability compensation, education assistance, home loans, and life insurance through the Veterans Benefits Administration (VBA). It also manages the National Cemetery Administration, which provides burial and memorial benefits to Veterans and their families.

Values: VA's core values are Integrity, Commitment, Advocacy, Respect, and Excellence, known as "I CARE."

Goals: VHA's Long-Range Plan Framework sets four goals:

  • Veterans choose VHA as their provider and coordinator.
  • VHA delivers high-quality, accessible and integrated care.
  • VHA maximizes performance and leads in innovation.
  • VHA optimizes assets across the enterprise.

Mission: VHA's mission is "To fulfill President Lincoln's promise to care for those who have served in our nation's military and for their families, caregivers, and survivors".

The current logo has become dated, so I set out to create a new, patriotic logo and tagline.

Current Logo and Tagline:

My new design:

Project 2 - Redesigning the VA's Logo:

The audience for this project is twofold:

First, the Department of Veterans Affairs' leadership and design team, who are responsible for maintaining a strong, consistent brand identity.

Second, the millions of Veterans, families, and caregivers who look to the VA as their trusted partner in health care, benefits, and support.

The message is that the VA is not just an institution, but a living promise to honor and serve those who have given so much. By pairing a modern, patriotic emblem with the tagline "Where Every Day Is Veteran's Day!" I'm communicating that respect and gratitude for Veterans is not limited to one day in November, it's a daily commitment.

I hoped to accomplish two things: showcase my ability to take an established brand and refresh it for modern use and create a visual identity that instills pride in the VA's mission while resonating with the public.

It's both a portfolio piece to demonstrate my skills and a design concept that could be implemented in real-world applications, from official signage to digital platforms.

Design Decisions:

I started with a shield, a timeless symbol of protection and honor. I incorporated stars and flowing stripes to represent both the American flag and the VA's role as a steadfast defender of Veterans' well-being.

I used a bold sans-serif typeface for "VA" to convey stability, strength, and modernity, ensuring the letters are immediately recognizable even at small sizes.

The tagline is placed prominently in a clean, legible font, reinforcing the message without overwhelming the main logo.

I created variations in color and black-and-white to ensure the design works across all mediums, from print to web to embroidery.

The deep red, white, and blue palette reinforces patriotism and trust.

The modern typeface and clean composition keep the design current, aligning with the VA's goals of innovation and accessibility.

And the tagline turns the design into a daily reminder of the VA's core values: Integrity, Commitment, Advocacy, Respect, and Excellence.

Company: CALSTART INC.

Website: CALSTART Inc.

CALSTART is a national non-profit organization that collaborates with businesses and governments to advance clean transportation solutions both nationally and globally. The organization aims to create a more prosperous and healthier future by accelerating innovation, growing the market, creating jobs, and reducing pollution through its network of influential industry leaders. CALSTART has offices in multiple states and also has a global presence through its "Global Commercial Vehicle Drive to Zero" program. The organization focuses on key areas like technology development, public policy advocacy, market acceleration, member support, and data insights across various sectors, including light-duty vehicles, buses, trucks, and fuels.

Values: CALSTART's values are to focus on improving air quality, protecting the environment, providing greater economic prosperity, and creating jobs.

Goals: The company's goal is to remove barriers to fundamental changes in clean transportation technology, fuels, and systems. It aims to reduce carbon-based emissions in the next decade to avoid the worst effects of climate change.

Mission: CALSTART's mission is to work with businesses and governments to develop clean, efficient transportation solutions.

The CALSTART job position is Graphic Design Intern

Graphic Design Intern

What You Will Be Doing

  • Assist in reviewing and updating brand guidelines to ensure consistency across departments and channels.

I decided to update the company's brand identity by creating a new Icon and Logo/Wordmark.

Current Logo and Tagline:

My new design:

Updating CALSTART's Brand Identity

For this project, my audience is CALSTART's leadership team, marketing department, and potential employers reviewing my design portfolio.

My intent is to show that I understand the value of strong brand identity and how it reflects an organization's mission, values, and goals.

The message is that CALSTART is a forward-thinking leader in clean transportation, and its visual identity should reflect that momentum, innovation, and environmental commitment.

My goal with this redesign was twofold. First, I wanted to present CALSTART with a fresh, modernized logo that still ties back to their recognizable brand. Second, I wanted to demonstrate my ability to take a brand from an outdated visual style to a new, professional look that works across digital and print media.

Design Decisions

  • Icon Shape and Style: I kept the road motif from the original logo, but gave it a sleek, rounded, and balanced design. This creates a sense of forward movement, which connects to CALSTART's mission of advancing clean transportation.
  • Color Palette: I chose a rich blue paired with an eco-friendly green. Blue represents trust, reliability, and technology, while green reinforces CALSTART's environmental focus and commitment to cleaner air.
  • Typography: I used a bold, modern sans-serif typeface for "CALSTART." It's clear, confident, and highly legible in both large and small formats, signaling professionalism and stability.
  • Layout Variations: I created vertical and horizontal versions of the logo, as well as standalone icons and black-and-white versions, to ensure flexibility for various applications, whether that's a website header, business card, or social media post.
  • Tagline Placement: The tagline "Changing Transportation for Good" is centered below the name in a lighter weight font. This allows it to be read quickly while keeping the focus on the CALSTART name.

I made each of these choices to balance brand recognition with a modern look that aligns with CALSTART's vision for the future.

Visual Storytelling Case Study 2

Visual Storytelling Case Study 2

Visual Storytelling Case Study 2

Case Study: Uber's Post-Crisis Rebrand (2018)

In 2018, Uber launched a major rebrand to recover from a series of scandals that damaged its reputation. These included workplace harassment claims, data breaches, and the resignation of founder Travis Kalanick.

Objectives

Uber's goals were to:

  1. Repair public trust
  2. Shift focus from growth-at-any-cost to community and safety
  3. Present a more human, inclusive brand image

Execution

Uber hired global branding firm Wolff Olins to lead the rebrand. Key changes included:

  • A new brand mission: "Movement ignites opportunity"
  • A custom typeface by MCKL to create a clean, modern look
  • New photography guidelines that featured riders and drivers, not cars
  • A black-and-white color palette with bright accent colors to reflect accessibility and simplicity
  • A more consistent logo and app interface across global markets

Results

  • The rebrand was generally well-received by design critics
  • Public perception of Uber improved modestly, though trust took time to rebuild
  • The focus on people over products helped reposition Uber as a service, not just a tech company
  • The company went public in 2019 with a more stable brand image

Key Takeaways

The campaign showed how design can support real behavioral change in a company. Uber's messaging, type, and imagery all reinforced a more responsible brand tone.

How I Will Apply This

This case showed me that rebranding is more than visuals. If the company's actions do not match the message, the design will fall flat.

Case Study: Jaguar's Failed 2024 Rebrand

In 2024, Jaguar attempted a rebrand to reposition itself as an all-electric luxury car brand. The campaign centered around a new slogan, "The Art of Quiet," with the goal of distancing the company from its gas-powered past and competing with brands like Tesla and Lucid Motors.

Objectives

Jaguar aimed to:

  1. Transition fully to electric vehicles by 2025
  2. Attract younger, luxury-conscious consumers
  3. Reposition itself as a minimalist, high-tech, design-first brand

Execution

The brand rollout included:

  • A new visual identity with a muted color palette and minimalist design
  • Commercials and digital ads focused on silence and smooth driving instead of performance
  • A lack of reference to Jaguar's legacy or existing brand recognition
  • Quiet, abstract marketing films with little product visibility

Results

  • The campaign generated confusion among longtime customers and failed to attract a new audience
  • No measurable spike in vehicle sales followed the launch
  • Online sentiment was mixed to negative, with critics citing a lack of emotional appeal or clear messaging
  • Brand recognition among Gen Z declined according to market research from Statista

Key Takeaways

The rebrand overlooked Jaguar's existing brand equity in favor of abstract, design-heavy messaging. Without a clear narrative or product focus, the campaign failed to connect with buyers.

How I Will Apply This

I learned that good design must support a clear message. A brand cannot afford to lose its identity in pursuit of trends. Future projects I work on will prioritize clarity, consistency, and emotional connection over style and trends.
