This week, I did a creative exercise found in the book:
"CAFFEINE FOR THE CREATIVE MIND" by Stefan Mumaw and Wendy Lee Oldfield. The exercise is on page 66.
Instructions: "I Was Told There'd Be No Math:
Ever wonder where numbers came from? Okay, maybe not, but there is some mystery to these magic characters. Ever wonder how we would count if there were no numbers? Okay, again, maybe not. There is a lot of security in numbers. They never lie. There are no double meanings. There's no past sense, present tense, participles or conjunctions. There are only ten usable digits, and every number is made up of some collection of them. Then there are things like Roman numerals, an alternate system of numbers. Your task today is to create a new set of "numbers." Your only restriction is that they can't be numbers, and they can't be Roman numerals. Invent another writable, countable method for representing numbers. "
Instructions: "Do two of the tutorials from the Adobe InDesign Tutorial Page - https://www.adobe.com/learn/indesign"
This Week I did the following two tutorials:
https://www.adobe.com/learn/indesign/web/create-mondrian-style-ad?learnIn=1
This tutorial showed how to design an interesting Mondrian layout in Adobe InDesign by creating a grid of frames for content and adjusting the sizing quickly using the Gap tool.
Mondrian layout typically uses horizontal and vertical black bars to divide the design into rectangular shapes. The shapes can be filled with color, images, text, or a combination of those elements.
With the Rectangle Frame tool selected, press and drag across your page. Without releasing the mouse button, press the up or down arrow keys to add or remove rows and press the right or left arrow keys to add or remove columns. When you have the correct number of frames, release the mouse button.
The Gap tool provides a quick way to adjust the size of a gap between two or more objects. It also lets you resize several objects that have commonly aligned edges simultaneously, while keeping the gaps between them fixed.

This tutorial showed how to precisely align, position, and resize objects without guessing.
Instructions: "Using the agreed-upon design elements, write and layout a 2-page article about yourself and why you chose to study Graphic Arts and Design. You can include what you have learned, stories, anecdotes, examples...
Export as .pdf or .pngs and post them on your blog, along with what you have learned from this project.
Post a link to your blog."
This is my first article for the magazine. My original article was over 1,500 words long, so my first lesson learned was to condense my thoughts so they would fit on the article pages without losing context. I learned how to place an image, resize the text frames and apply the paragraph and character styles the professor provided.

This Week I did the following two tutorials:
https://www.adobe.com/learn/indesign/web/decorative-lettering?learnIn=1
This tutorial showed how to create a drop cap and apply an image inside of the letter.

Add finishing touches to a magazine cover using the powerful typography features in InDesign.
This tutorial showed how to create text on a path using an ellipse, create a paragraph style, and how to rotate the text.

"My Words Caught a Fly:
Look around your current space and identify a random company name. Circle the name. Draw six lines from that circle. At the end of each line, write a word that is related to the word in the circle. Connect the related words to create a mind map. This is a great brainstorming tool when looking for alternative views for a project or client."
I chose Microsoft and created a mind map with related words.

Instructions: Is that how they made the pyramids?:
Point of view can make the difference between good and great.
By looking at problems from another point of view, we can often find solutions that we've never seen before.
Putting yourself in the shoes of another, figuratively speaking of course, often provides an alternate view. On a piece of paper, draw nine triangles, all of equal size and composition and equally spaced across the entire paper. Create something from the point of view of:

Instructions: The Million Dollar Idea List:
Everyone has an idea for a product, service, or improvement to a product or service that could make a million dollars if ever produced. It's time to start your own list of ideas for things that could potentially make a million dollars if you ever created them.
1. Personalized Health Coach AI: An advanced AI that tailors fitness, diet, and mental health plans specifically for each user, continuously adapting based on real-time data and progress, using the "Complete Body Analysis Scale".
2. The "Complete Body Analysis Scale" uses medical-grade sensors on the handlebars and the scale platform, which connect with users' hands and feet for a highly accurate body scan. This provides deeper insights into the body's composition. It connects through Wi-Fi or Bluetooth to an app on your phone or computer and provides complete body analysis.
The sensors provide metrics such as weight, body fat percentage, muscle mass, and bone density. To ensure the highest level of accuracy, the device uses dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) as the primary method for measuring body composition.
Complete CBC Blood Work Analysis.

"Create a brand identity guide to ensure consistency across all restaurant materials. Your guide should include:
✔ Logo usage guidelines (including line art, B&W, full color, and reverse-color versions)
✔ Typography choices & correct usage
✔ Color palette with RGB/CMYK values
✔ Mood board/inspiration images
✔ Example applications (menu, social media, signage, etc.)"
"Design your restaurant's menu with clear hierarchy and aesthetic appeal. Consider font pairings, spacing, and colors. Your menu should include:
• Appetizers, main dishes, desserts, and beverages
• Fusion descriptions that match your brand's unique experience
• A design that reflects your restaurant's visual identity
This menu must be 2-sided and designed as either a bi-fold or tri-fold menu.
It is okay to use ChatGPT or other AI tools to write the copy for your menu and then lay out that copy in Illustrator. It is also acceptable to use Dall-e, mid-journey, or Firefly to create images of your menu items; however, you will want to ensure that the images look like they were photographed professionally at the same time as the rest of the images used throughout your menu."

"Identify 5-8 touchpoints where customers will interact with your brand. Examples include:
✔ Restaurant signage
✔ Tableware (napkins, plates, takeout bags, etc.)
✔ Staff uniforms
✔ Social media / digital advertising
✔ Loyalty cards or promotions
✔ Take out packaging
✔ Tabletop Signage
✔ Loyalty cards or promotions
Create at least three. Discuss what you created and why in your blog post."
I chose to use a roadside billboard as my primary touch point, utilizing both Illustrator and Photoshop. I then used the mockup feature for a black t-shirt, to-go bag, shoulder bag/large purse and cloth napkin.

"CAFFEINE FOR THE CREATIVE MIND" by Stefan Mumaw and Wendy Lee Oldfield. The exercise is on page 47.
"Don't underestimate the power of example! Showing someone how to do something is the easiest form of communication. But as communicators, we rarely get that level of intimacy with our target audience, so we must use other methods to reach our intended market. Sometimes, the most difficult form of communication is using words. Time to get back to basics! On a piece of paper, write out, in words only, instructions on how to tie a shoelace."
