Visual Storytelling Project 1

Visual Storytelling Project 1

Visual Storytelling Project 1

Instructions: Either A - Create a poster for an event, cause, or product that shows your understanding and application of Empathy, Composition, and Storytelling principles.

Or B - Recreate a poster or Design that you have previously done, showing your understanding and application of Empathy, Composition, and Storytelling principles.

For my project I choose option B, to recreate a poster that I had previously done.

I did this poster in November of 2024. The assignment was designing emotion. We were to choose a song and create a composition that illustrated the emotion and what the song communicates without displaying the title of the song in the poster.

The song I chose was Duality by Slipknot.

My original blog post is at Designing Emotion

My original composition aims to communicate the raw emotional conflict of "Duality", the struggle between chaos and clarity, pain and relief, and the tension of opposing forces within oneself. It seeks to evoke feelings of turmoil, intensity, and introspection, aligning with the song's themes of internal struggle and catharsis. The poster captures the essence of the song without illustrating its literal lyrics, creating a mood that resonates with the listener's emotional experience.

Visual Storytelling Project 1

I created a new "Duality" poster with a new theme to explore the timeless conflict between good and evil. My goal was to communicate a clear moral choice through strong visual cues.

Empathy:
I arranged the central figure, a priest, to serve as a neutral point of connection. His calm expression invites viewers to place themselves in his position, facing a decision between two opposing forces. This human element grounds the story, making the viewer consider their own choices.

Composition:
I divided the poster symmetrically, using red fiery tones on the left to represent temptation and darkness, and cool radiant tones on the right to signify virtue and light. The priest is centered, bridging the two worlds, with stairs leading toward each path. This balance emphasizes the tension of decision-making while guiding the viewer's eye naturally across the scene.

Storytelling:
The poster tells a complete narrative without the need for words, just a title: a person stands at a crossroads, with two powerful paths before them. The devil and the angel are stylized archetypes, immediately recognizable symbols of conflict. The glowing gates behind each figure reinforce what lies at the end of each choice.

By combining empathy, composition, and clear visual storytelling, I created a poster that feels dramatic, thought-provoking, and symbolic.
